a performance sculpture
In this exercise, the performer presents a package of something that is typically consumed, an empty bowl, and the instruments that typically aid in its consumption (if any) in front of a name plaque that reads "Soup 20XX". In comfortable attire, they then proceed to walk around the room or space in an attempt to familiarize themselves with their surroundings and the people and objects that contribute to the space. When the time is right, the performer returns to the soup setup and begins the "non-consumption" process: where they then without word or sound, take in servings of the consumable substance, chewing it to the point where they would typically swallow, then right before the swallowing would occur, the performer instead spits the masticated substance into the soup bowl. The performance ends when the totality of the consumable substance has been transferred to the bowl. This exercise does not always require an audience, especially not a captive one.
